Frequently Asked Questions

How will you charge me?

The charges for written translation work are based on the word count of the original document. Documents containing up to 30 words are translated for free, apart from slogans.

The charges for editing other people’s work are based on how much time it takes to edit the document. Documents containing up to 75 words are edited for free.

The charges for simultaneous translation are based on:

  • the duration of the event,
  • the distance travelled to and from the event,
  • the cost of hiring equipment (if necessary).

The cost of hiring equipment will depend on the supplier used and the number of people attending the event who will need simultaneous translation.

In order to obtain a 'no obligation' estimate for a piece of work, please complete the relevant Request Form, and return it to us. Please feel free to contact us if you would like any further information.

Once you have received your translation, and either confirmed that you are happy with it or that the proofread proof has gone to print (if applicable), we will send you an invoice. Our payment terms are 28 days after the invoice date.

How long will it take to complete the work?

As a guide, it is possible for us to translate and proofread up to 1500 words per working day. Please bear this in mind when suggesting deadlines for written translation work.

The time needed to edit the work of other people will depend on the amount of editing needed.

Please provide as much notice as possible when requesting translation or editing services, to ensure your deadline can be met.

I'd like you to provide me with a price for completing a piece of work – are you able to provide an estimate for me?

Of course! Please complete the relevant request form (see below) and return it to us with the required information and document(s) and we will be delighted to promptly provide you with an estimate for translating, or editing, a document, or simultaneous translation.

How can I be sure of the quality of your work?

Full membership of the Association of Welsh Translators and Interpreters, the recognised professional body, ensures the quality of our work. Further information about our qualifications, experience and skills:

All work undertaken is always proofread before it is delivered to the client. This process ensures that the translation is correct, of a high standard and reads well.

We have Professional Indemnity Insurance cover with one of the industry’s leading insurers.

If you would like further information about our quality assurance processes see this flowchart, or contact us.

How can I send work to you to be translated?

Text for translation can be provided by e-mail, by fax, in hard copy format or on disk, and can be returned to you in any of these formats.

If text for translation is provided via e-mail, we can then over-type the original text to ensure that the translated document reflects the original document in terms of content, style and format. However, you should be aware that Welsh text takes up slightly more space than English text, and therefore you will need to plan accordingly in terms of layout.

Short translations (up to 30 words) can be provided over the phone, but they will be returned in another format (by e-mail, by fax, in hard copy format or on disk) to ensure accuracy.

We are unable to proofread or edit faxed documents, as errors can occur when documents and proofs are faxed, especially when a very small print, or a coloured background, is used.

What computer programmes do you use?

We use Microsoft Office 2007 (with backward compatability), including MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint. We can also translate files supplied in PDF format, although the translated work will be returned as a MS Word file. We also use the Welsh spell-checker program CySill.

Tanat Translation has extensive experience of using translation memory software including Trados, Déjà Vu and Wordfast. We are able to work with existing Translation Memories you supply, and can deliver the translation to you without ‘cleaning’ it, to enable you to add it to your Translation Memory.

Which languages can you translate?

We are able to translate from Welsh into English or from English into Welsh. Further information about our qualifications, experience and skills:
